The Yamaha YTR8310Z custom trumpet was developed in collaboration with world-renowned trumpeter Bob Shew. "This new 8310Z is absolutely great," raves Shew. "I never thought the 6310Z could be improved but you really did it. The bigger, warmer sound is thrilling to hear; my first practice session with the horn produced a new, warm sound and inspired me to write a tune based upon the sound and feel of this wonderful trumpet. It's like having a new career in front of me!"
The YTR8310Z utilizes a new bell-making process and the seam has been moved to the side, the wall thickness tapers towards the flare, and the small bell bead is rounded on one side and flat on the other. The improvement in sound is dramatic - the tone is rich and full with a solid core, it projects like a laser beam and is easier to hear in the section. You really have to hear it to appreciate the difference.
The YTR8310Z custom trumpet has hand-lapped pistons. Hand-lapping pistons and slides ensures an absolutely perfect fit and seal between the pistons and casing or slide parts. Such a perfect fit helps to achieve smooth air flow and smooth action and improves the response and intonation of the instrument. Other important features include laser-fused pluzuma welded bell, and a one-piece, drawn, gold brass leadpipe.
Several elements of the Yamaha YTR8310Z are borrowed from the Xeno series, including leadpipe, braces, water keys and valve caps. While retaining the stepped-bore and the efficient, responsive characteristics of the YTR6310Z, the YTR8310Z feels more open and easier to blow. The notes slot easily and the high register just sings, yet there is a surprising amount of latitude, the horn doesn't fight you - it feels great, right from the outset.
